GO GREEN: A Helpful Guide for Small Businesses

GO GREEN

In the spirit of St. Patricks Day, I wanted to share tips on how your business can GO GREEN!

I hear you, making your business environmentally friendly takes time and effort. Sure, recycling is a great first step, but there are many ways you can reduce your businesses carbon footprint. By doing so you can improve company morale and feel good about promoting a positive mission of environmental sustainability. Set the tone for other local biz and #GoGreen!

Here are my 6 favorite tips on how to do so… be sure to download the Green Guide to read more on how to realistically implement these strategies.

1. Lighting: Utilizing natural light and turning lights off when you leave the room can save 15% annually.

2. Heating: And cooling, for us Floridians! This is the second biggest drain on energy in the workplace.

3. Unplug: Leaving your laptop plugged in is a waste of time and money. As soon as you’re fully charged.. unplug!

4. Energy Monitoring: So, how much energy do you actually use? Review your data and strategize on ways to cut back.

5. Go Digital: Eliminate paper waste if it can be sent via email. Urge customers and clients to use ebills and docusign.

6. Recycled Paper: Paper production has a colossal environmental impact. Comparatively, recycled paper requires 28-70% less to process than standard paper.

  1. I really love all these tips and the infographic, which I of course pinned. I know that I unplug my laptop right away and have been reusing paper. IE, if something doesn’t come out right from the printer, I don’t throw it away, I use the other side and keep it in my desk for different things instead of wasting paper.
This winter our heating bills have been crazy, so I’ve had to be careful and use smaller heaters in the office. I also got these new lights that are meant to replicate sunlight so it’s brighter and I don’t have as many lights on! These are really great tips for going green!

    1. That’s a good idea about your paper usage. I’m guilty of throwing away paper that I don’t need anymore… It is perfect for jotting down notes, etc. alongside my computer. Way to go!

  2. Great tip about unplugging your laptop. I am working on this with all of my electronics. I make sure the Keurig is unplugged after I have used it, the laptop, and any other appliance (minus the fridge of course!) so I can save some green.

  3. Excellent tips! I always turn off lights when out of a room and sometimes when I’m in the room such as when using my laptop which gives me all the light I need. I also am very careful to manage heating and cooling needs, opening doors when we want the heat or warmth at the time to come inside and thereby delaying the need for AC or heating use.

  4. Great idea to educate small business in simple, easy ways to go green. I am a big advocate of using paper on both sides and always have a pile to grab from for scrap. Fortunately have lots of natural light in my work areas and only will bead with natural light. It is amazing how colors look different under different lighting. Found out the hard way. Love the infographic. and the one you made.

    1. Thanks, Ros! For small businesses especially, a little difference in bills can create an overall financial impact. Natural light is the way to go 🙂

  5. Great tips, Holly, and I love the first image! Good stuff. I confess…I’m a light hog. I will leave on a light if I know I’ll be returning home after dark, and will absolutely put on several lights in the living room. I have a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder and need to have light surroundings to keep me from going ’round the bend. 😉 But I do use compact bulbs in all my fixtures. So I figure I’m doing my part!

  6. Lots of green tips to take away from here…I’m glad you shared the various options broken down by affordability. I’m glad to see you promoting green development to improve the environment and our health. The UN ‘ S Green Industry Platform (which my charity JB Dondolo, Inc. Is a member of) supports individuals and companies that build or promote green. Check them out.

    Thanks.

  7. Ohhhh, look at you creating an infographic! Go YOU! I am saving it for some relocation clients to post on their social later. Awesome stuff and not just for small businesses, a lot of these could be for households too! 🙂
